MOCA - Laurentiu Todie

I came across some interesting work in a gallery called "Art by Laurentiu Todié - Pixel Painting."  The pieces in this gallery are created using images, most of them well-known, that the artist breaks down to the pixel level, making them hard to recognize up close.  If you zoom out or look at them from a distance, you can begin to decipher the image.  One image I saw in the gallery that made me laugh was the woman on the Land-o-Lakes Butter logo, entitled "Land-o-Lakes Babe."  I probably wouldn't have known it was that image without the help of the title.

Care to take a guess at what the image below is from? A hint: the title is "One"

If you guessed that it was George Washington's face from the $1 bill, you are right!

Again, this gallery caught my attention because the effect of presenting images in pixelated form made it difficult to identify.  It was kind of fun to try though, almost like a recognition game.  The artist says, "I use pixels.  I reduce the resolution of photos (usually screen shots of my own images or from the public domain) to make them hardly recognizable."  I think this is a very creative and playful way to manipulate images to catch viewers' attention.  I certainly enjoyed looking through this gallery.

  1. These "pixels" have a hand made look as they are uneven and have a mottled color in each tile.... an interesting effect... Thanks for posting.
